      Plantain information

      Plantain is used by herbal practitioners as a gentle expectorant and astringent.

      Plantain can be used for:

      Soothing sore and inflamed mucous membranes

      Coughs

      Mild bronchitis

      Diarrhoea

      Haemorrhoids

      Urinary infections especially where there is bleeding

      Inflammation

      Side effects

      None expected. Avoid if pregnant or breast feeding

      Active compounds

      Glycosides, mucilage, tannins.

      Plantain can be used to alleviate urinary infections and inflammations, diarrhoea, water retention, haemorrhoids, and excessive menstrual bleeding.   Its soothing qualities make it useful in the treatment of sore throats, inflammation of the respiratory tract membranes, dry coughs and mild bronchitis.  Externally it can be used as a poultice to relieve insect bites and stings. 

      Tincture dose

      Adult dose:                 1 - 3mls three times a day. 

      Children’s dose:        0.7 - 1mls three times a day.

      Based on a ratio of herb to alcohol of 1:2
