      Vervain is used by herbal practitioners as a nervine tonic.

      Vervain can be used for:

      Tension and stress

      Depression, especially after an illness

      Nervous breakdown

      Feverish conditions, such as ‘flu

      Inflammation of the gall bladder

      Jaundice

      Colic especially in children

      Painful periods

      Epilepsy

      Precautions

      Do not take in pregnancy

       

      Interactions

      Reduces the absorption of iron, therefore do not take at the same time as iron supplements, allow a 2 hour gap.

      Bitter glycosides, essential oil, mucilage, tannins

       

      What herbal practitioners say about Vervain

      Vervain strengthens the nervous system and relaxes tension and stress and combines well with oat seed.  It can be used to ease depression, especially if brought on after an illness such as influenza.  Vervain is useful in the treatment of liver disorders such as jaundice and inflammation of the gall bladder.  It combines well with lemon balm, chamomile and licorice in the treatment of infantile colic and gastric irritation. It is a traditional remedy for infected gums and tooth decay, halitosis and tonsillitis.   In traditional Chinese medicine Verbena is used to treat migraines associated with female sex hormone fluctuations.

      Tincture dose

      Adult dose:                  1 - 2mls three times a day.  

      Children’s dose:          0.5 – 0.8mls three times a day.

      Based on a ratio of fresh herb to alcohol of 1:2
